On Friday, March 12, Ecology Ottawa joined grassroots groups from across the city to submit technical comments into the City of Ottawa’s draft Official Plan. This effort, the work of the People’s Official Plan network and contributing organizations, marks a years-long undertaking that translated community feedback and hundreds of consultations into tangible policy recommendations for the City of Ottawa.

Here’s a quick summary of the 117-page document:
We support the high level policy directions that guide the draft Official Plan, and support the vast majority of the high level policy statements of the November 20, 2020 draft Official Plan. We support the vision and direction of regeneration, the healthy walkable 15-minute neighbourhoods and the shift from a car-centric to a community-centric development vision. However, we are equally clear in our assessment that this draft fails to get us to where we need to go, and lacks the readability required of a foundational policy document designed to respond to public needs.
The conversation on Ottawa’s new Official Plan is still in play until fall 2021. This is the beginning of an important political phase, where mobilizing support for key changes could profoundly impact the policy outcome, and the shape of our city for generations. Stay tuned in the weeks and months ahead for opportunities for action.
