Join us! “What Sprawl Costs Ottawa” webinar – Tuesday, May 26 at 12pm

Ottawa city councillors are about to make the biggest decision – and probably the biggest mistake – of their political careers.

An expanded urban boundary will trigger more sprawl, destroy precious farmland and wild spaces, make it harder to deliver essential services like affordable housing and transit, and make the city more vulnerable in a climate emergency (or the next pandemic).

And it’s completely unnecessary. City staff say there’s enough land inside the boundary to serve population growth until 2036, while developers who are demanding the expanded boundary admit it won’t make homes more affordable.

Ottawa isn’t the only city dealing with urban sprawl, and an expanded boundary isn’t the only option. When you attend this webinar, co-hosted by Ecology Ottawa and Energy Mix Productions, you’ll hear from:

• Paul Johanis, Greenspace Alliance of Canada’s Capital

• Dave Thompson, Principal, PolicyLink Research Canada, Victoria, author of a 2013 report on the cost of sprawl

• Claire Nelischer, Project Manager, Ryerson City Building Institute, Toronto

• Moe Garahan, Executive Director, Just Food

• Mitchell Beer, Publisher, The Energy Mix
