The Rideau River is under threat

Ottawa is blessed by a living network of creeks, streams, rivers and lakes. Unlike many cities, we have done a good job safeguarding river shorelines in many area of the city. The Ottawa River is bounded by a green wall of trees and grasslands, and the Rideau River is almost exclusively buttressed by trees, greenspace, beaches and residential properties.

Poor development choices can quickly turn a good situation bad. Right now, a bad development is being proposed for 2175 Prince of Wales Drive, just southeast of the Hunt Club and Prince of Wales intersection.

The City of Ottawa is contemplating rezoning a vacant lot across from the Metropolitan Bible Church to allow a car dealership. Besides adding congestion next to a busy (and dangerous) intersection, this development will pave over a patch of greenspace and risk allowing toxic vehicle effluents to seep into the soil and the Rideau River. To add insult to injury, the purpose of the development is to add more cars to an already car-choked area of our city.

We can stop this rezoning by acting now. Write Mayor Jim Watson today (jim.watson@ottawa.ca), and CC area councillor Keith Egli (keith.egli@ottawa.ca).

For background documentation, please see the attached brief from the Glens Community Association, which is also opposing this development.
