It’s a growing fact: local foods are better for the environment, the economy, and overall health. The less distance food travels to get to the grocery store, less emissions are emitted into the environment, and the fresher and healthier the produce for the citizens buying them.
But what if produce were grown directly from the store’s location?
In Montreal, the grocery store IGA is the first Canadian grocery store to grow their own vegetables on their 25 000 square-foot roof, which are then sold to customers in store. They grow over 30 kinds of vegetables, all certified as organic, from traditional garden veggies like tomatoes and lettuce to less-common ones, like eggplant, basil and kale. It doesn’t get any fresher than that!
Additional environmental perks: water collected from the store’s dehumidifier system is reused to water the vegetable garden, and the roof itself has become a home for birds and insects to dwell in.
Can you imagine the increase in food quality if organic food were this accessible in Ottawa’s grocery stores? Just imagine strolling through one of these at your nearest supermarket!
