Green Eggs’N’Protest: Rallying Against TransCanada Pipeline Talk at Ottawa Chamber of Commerce on Eve of Earth Day

The Ottawa Chamber of Commerce should not be hosting a talk by a TransCanada executive the day before Earth Day. Stefan Baranski, TransCanada’s Ontario Director, is scheduled to present at the “Eggs’N”Icons” breakfast series Thursday morning April 21.

TransCanada is the company behind the Energy East pipeline, a project that would see 1.3 million barrels of tar sands oil a day pumped through Ottawa via an aging gas pipeline. If approved, Energy East would be the biggest pipeline in North America.

Supporters of Green Eggs’N’Protest will be outside the Sheraton Hotel at 150 Albert St. at 6:30AM Thursday to say “no” to the pipeline and “no” to giving TransCanada this platform in our city.

“Today, it would not be acceptable to host a tobacco executive on the eve of Lung Cancer day,” said Graham Saul Executive Director of Ecology Ottawa. “It’s bad form to host an executive from one of the dirtiest industries in the world on the eve of Earth Day, but the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce has refused to cancel the event.”

Green Eggs’N’Protest is organized by Ecology Ottawa in partnership with the Council of Canadians, 350.org Ottawa, Greenpeace Ottawa, FossilFree University of Ottawa, Groupe D’Action Équiterre en Outaouais, Outaouais pour la Justice Climatique et Sociale and the Carleton Food Collective.

Ecology Ottawa’s Graham Saul and Renewable City Organizer Alex Tétreault will be at the rally and are available for interviews.

Ecology Ottawa is working to make Ottawa the green capital of Canada.
