PRESS RELEASE — For immediate release
Ottawans asked to voice their support for clean energy
More than 850 people have already signed the Clean Energy Petition
Sept. 21, 2011, Ottawa – Ecology Ottawa officially launched a petition campaign yesterday, urging Ottawans to voice their support for the feed-in-tariff program to ensure we all enjoy clean air, and more than 850 people have already signed on.
Renewable energy is quickly becoming one of the most talked about election issues in the provincial election and there has never been a more important time for people who support clean, renewable energy to voice that support.
“Thanks to the Green Energy and Green Economy Act, we are on the brink of a huge breakthrough in renewable energy, clean air, green jobs and fighting climate change in Ontario,” said Graham Saul, chair of Ecology Ottawa. “However, if all political parties do not continue to support renewable energy incentives, such as the feed-in tariff program, we are at risk of losing the momentum and getting cut off at the knees just when we are getting started.”
Ecology Ottawa volunteers have been taking to the streets to collect signatures, and the petition is also available for people to sign-on on-line, here.
The text of the petition is as follows:
Dear Municipal and Provincial Leaders,
Our future depends on investing in renewable energy. Ontario’s world class program, the feed-in tariff program, is making us a leader in renewable energy by providing incentives for all Ontarians to get involved.
In his 2011 Budget speech, the Mayor of Ottawa committed to making Ottawa the number one city in Ontario in the uptake of renewable energy.
We support the mayor’s call for Ottawa to be a leader in the uptake of renewable energy. We believe that the feed-in tariff program is a vital element to realizing a renewable energy future and we urge all politicians in Ontario to strengthen it.
The deadline for signing the petition is September 30. Before Election Day on October 6, Ecology Ottawa will share the petition with local politicians and candidates to ensure they understand how many Ottawa residents support renewable energy.
