SUMMARY:Climate Change at Crossroads
DESCRIPTION:Ten Thousand Villages will be hosting Climate Change at a Crossroads\, An Update on Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth with David Rhynas. David brings his engaging presentation about the issue of Climate Change to Ten Thousand Villages\, Ottawa\, at our 371 Richmond Road store location on Thursday April 19th. Climate Reality Canada has released an updated slideshow from former U.S. Vice President and Nobel laureate Al Gore based on his book\, Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis. A lot has happened since the documentary movie An Inconvenient Truth and there are some compelling updates on the latest science and solutions. A professional engineer and a volunteer with Climate Reality Canada\, David became inspired after reading Al Gore’s book and attending a training session by Mr. Gore. There are a number of initiatives our society could readily undertake that make sense in their own right and would contribute to a more sustainable world. Informal Q&A and discussion to follow. For more information about Climate Reality Canada: visit http://www.climatereality.ca/

SUMMARY:GIANT RAIN BARREL SALE IN MANOTICK
DESCRIPTION:Always wanted a rain barrel and never got around to getting one? You’re in luck…two of your favourite charities\, the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind and the Rideau Valley Conservation Foundation\, are combining forces to bring you a timely\, convenient and inexpensive chance to finally get your rain barrel. Rain barrel orders are now being taken for pickup on Saturday\, April 14\, 2012. Pick up is from 9 am to 1 pm at the barn at 4082 Rideau Valley Drive (beside Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind Headquarters which is less than one kilometre east of the Rideau Valley Conservation Centre). No household limits and no residency requirements are imposed … it’s an ideal time to order one for home but perhaps more importantly\, one for the cottage too. Runoff from both city properties and cottage lots into lakes\, creeks and storm sewers can be a major source of contamination. Rain barrels effectively and safely reduce the amount of water running directly into your local watercourse or lake (or your storm sewer in the city); they encourage infiltration of rain and snow on your property; and they provide a ready\, inexpensive source of excellent water for the garden all summer long. Each barrel comes fully equipped with a leaf and mosquito filter\, an overflow adaptor (permitting multiple barrels to be connected in series)\, 1.2 metres of overflow hose and spigot that attaches directly to a garden hose. The price is $55 per barrel all inclusive. Additional overflow hose can also be purchased if required. Please ORDER YOUR BARRELS IN ADVANCE ONLINE at http://rainbarrel.ca/guidedogs/. Bring your receipt to 4082 Rideau Valley Drive\, Manotick on Saturday\, April 14 to pick up your barrels. Many thanks in advance for supporting Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind and Rideau Valley Conservation Foundation and for conserving our precious water resources.

SUMMARY:Annual Moonlight Snowshoe Challenge
DESCRIPTION:CPAWS Ottawa Valley is having it's annual Moonlight Snowshoe Challenge in Gatineau Park (at Meech Creek Valley). Participants are asked to raise at least $100 through sponsorship for the event\, and all of the money raised will go towards CPAWS' efforts to protect forests and wildlife in Canada. If there is not very much snow or if the snow is packed for the event\, snowshoes wont be required so it will just be a hike. We will be stopping at a camp fire in the forest for hot chocolate and a desert\, which will be provided by CPAWS. This is a great opportunity to get out into the beautiful forest at night to see it from a different prospective\, and is a good opportunity to learn about what CPAWS does in the community/Canada to protect parks and wilderness. SUMMARY:Finding God in Earth: Spirituality in a Time of Ecological Crisis
DESCRIPTION:A series of creative conversations in honour of the 400th anniversary of the Jesuits in Canada. Finding God in Earth: Spirituality in a Time of Ecological Crisis\, Lecture by Yvonne Prowse at Saint Paul University Amphitheatre Room G1124 The root of the ecological crisis is a spiritual crisis. When we fail to acknowledge the reality of the divine in Earth\, the Earth becomes vulnerable to destruction by humans. In the midst of the crisis there is also a renewal in the appreciation of our spiritual experience of Creation. Can this be a source of healing our relationships with God\, with other humans and the remainder of Creation – the source of ecological healing? Event held by

SUMMARY:Investing in Solar Power - Benefiting from the Green Energy Act
DESCRIPTION:Come learn what 40\,000 Ontarians have already figured out: how investing in solar power provides a stable\, long term financial return. This payment is known as a "feed-in tariff\," made possible by Ontario’s Green Energy Act. Come learn a step-by-step plan for installing solar power on your home. Don’t have a good rooftop? We will also discuss an opportunity to invest in renewable energy through the Ottawa Renewable Energy Cooperative.

SUMMARY:Just Food Presents: Where’s the food in Barrhaven?
DESCRIPTION:Community groups in Barrhaven and Centretown are conducting an assessment of the food services\, programs\, and options in each neighbourhood\, called “Where’s the Food? Finding Out About Food in Your Community.” This project will investigate topics including food in neighbourhood schools\, community gardens\, agricultural land\, emergency food provision\, hunger and poverty\, and the availability of food services in the neighbourhood. The Where’s the Food project uses a toolkit developed specifically for Ottawa neighbourhoods to understand the food issues in the community. Volunteers work together to gather information about the food services\, programs\, and issues that are important in the community\, and use this research to plan for action. We are looking for interested community members to participate in this project in Barrhaven and Centretown – there will be supports and resources provided. All that you need to bring is your interest and enthusiasm. Bus tickets and childcare are available\, and meetings are held in wheelchair accessible locations. A group in Barrhaven has been meeting since August - but new participants are always welcome! Join us for our next meeting.
