Just Food AGM

Just Food has recently become incorporated as an independent, not-for-profit organization. While we have had a strategic board for eight years, and many open community meetings, our first official Annual General Meeting is taking place May 22, from 5:00 to 6:30 pm.  Light refreshments will be served. RSVP is required.
This meeting will allow you to hear in more detail the work that is happening on several projects Just Food is involved with and take part in discussions of our future plans.
You’re encouraged to become a member so that you can also take part in the election of our new Board of Directors and approve the Constitution and Bylaws.
How do you become a member?  We will have information on our website and in another news bulletin about how to become a member and how to take part in the election of our new Board of Directors.

Building Nigeria’s Response to Climate Change (BNRCC)

You are invited to learn about Building Nigeria’s Response to Climate Change
(BNRCC), a 5-year CIDA-funded project that is supporting both government and
civil society to develop climate change adaptation policies and initiatives. The
presenters will talk on a range of topics, including their experience in working
with the Special Climate Change Unit under the Federal Ministry of the
Environment to formulate a national climate change adaptation strategy, to
supporting the implementation of adaptation initiatives in communities across the
country. The project will come to an end in December 2011.

Ecological Design and Gardening: Introduction to Permaculture

A two-day + one evening course on Permaculture design. The ethics, principles and design process of permaculture design are based on living systems and draws upon indigenous knowledge. They can be applied to physical systems (eg. farms, gardens, cities) and to social systems (eg. organisational flows, business models, school curricula) anywhere. The course focuses on permaculture as design, which can be broadly applied to land-based, urban, social or economic systems.

Great Glebe GREEN Garage Sale

Now in it’s 5th year, the Great Glebe GREEN Garage Sale has become one of Ecology Ottawa’s flagship annual events. What started as a humble fundraiser in 2008 has grown into a massive event that—in addition to the garage sale itself—also features a bake sale, vegetarian BBQ, and live performances by local DJs, bands, and musicians. We also have massage therapists to help you relax after a long day of shopping, face painting and other fun activities for kids, hula hoop lessons (for all ages!), performers on stilts, and much, much more! We even have portable public washrooms on site (for when nature calls).

Heritage Tree Workshop

How to get Ottawa’s special trees protected.

This one-day workshop is based on the OUFC (Ontario Urban Forest Council) publication Securing the Future of Heritage Trees: A Protection Toolkit for Communities. It includes sessions on the value of (urban) trees, tree stories, protecting heritage trees, and good heritage tree stewardship practices.
The workshop will be held at the Central Experimental Farm with a follow-up June 9 field trip to Rideau Hall, the Champlain Oaks, the Arboretum and other locations. Speakers and Registration details may be found at www.oufc.org.
